ATTN: Carers, there’s support available for you too!

DATE POSTED: 14 AUGUST 2022

Being a parent to a child with a disability (you are referred to as a ‘Carer’), is often a thankless role. You’re stretched between so many different people and places, all whilst trying to be a wonderful parent.

We firstly, just wanted to say we think you are doing an amazing job.

Here at Achievable we are passionate about ensuring carers are doing the best for their child. By doing the best for their child, this also means taking care of themselves too.

We know being a carer it can be hard to find the resources to take time for yourself. If you’re doing something for yourself, who will be watching the kids? If you spend money on yourself, will you still be able to afford swimming lessons? We get it.

Thankfully, there are a range of organisations around Australia, as well as government initiatives here to help.

CARER GATEWAY

The one we recommend most, is the Carer Gateway. They offer:

  • A free counselling service to carers

  • A stack of free information about how to look after physical and emotional health as a carer on their website

  • Peer support groups (in-person & online) – it’s nice to connect with people who get it!

  • Tailored support packages

  • Self-guided coaching (in-person & online)

  • Online skills courses – to develop your understanding and learn skills, relevant to being a carer

  • Access to emergency respite – if you are to become sick, injured or can’t otherwise continue to care for the participant, respite care can be arranged whilst you recover.

A quick heads up - The organisations providing the Carer Gateway services vary from state to state (i.e. CarersWA, CarersQLD etc.). Check out more info on their website here.

SERVICES AUSTRALIA

You might already be familiar with this one, but it’s a goodie. Services Australia provide a variety of payments for carers. Make sure you check out the eligibility criteria for them as they may vary. You can see the range of resources and payments they offer here.

MYTIME

Another wonderful organisation is MyTime. They specifically support parents and carers of children with disability. They share a similar belief to us, that yes, being a parent/carer is important, but so are you. Their aim is to be a place for you to come to where you can unwind, share ideas and experiences with those who get it. They have local groups so you can meet with people close to you. Find out more information here.

These organisations are just a start. Feel free to google ‘Carer Support Australia’ or more specific to your location to find some more support. If you find any gems, make sure to let us know so we can share with other wonderful carers, just like you!

We hope this helps you to better understand what supports are available out there for carers.
