Support Coordination, who gets it funded?

DATE POSTED: 14 AUGUST 2022

Have you heard about a mysterious service called Support Coordination? It sounds amazing, but you don’t seem to have it funded in your child’s NDIS plan?

You’re not alone! It is not included in every participant’s plan, especially children.

If you’re unsure if you have it funded, head to the Capacity Building section of the NDIS plan. You’ll see ‘Support Coordination’ clearly listed.

Unlike funding for something like Plan Management, it’s not something you can simply request and be granted it, just like that. Although we think every family should receive it, at least initially when entering the scheme!

To be funded for Support Coordination, the NDIS needs to deem you ‘eligible’. It’s determined on a case-by-case basis and is usually only funded for temporary periods of time. The idea is that you will develop the skills you need through working alongside a Support Coordinator, so you won’t need one forever.

Support Coordination is typically funded for participants when:

  • The participant has very minimal/no known informal supports

  • The participant faces cultural and/or language barriers

  • The participant’s parent/carer has a disability themselves

  • The participant’s immediate family has more than one family member with a disability (i.e. more than one child)

Just note, you might meet some of the above criteria and still not have Support Coordination funded. This is when we suggest you contact your LAC/planner directly and request this to be funded. In your request, ensure to include your reasons why you believe you should have Support Coordination funded in the NDIS plan.

If you are funded for Support Coordination and would like Achievable to provide this service to you – please head to our Support Coordination page to apply.

We hope this helps you to better understand how Support Coordination is funded.
